Abstract EN

Regional development plans in Saudi Arabia succeeded in providing various regions in the country with services sufficient to meet their population needs.

It is suggested that projects, such as social services and infrastructure projects, provided by the development plans for the Targeted regions achieved some of the development plans goals.

It is also assumed that the concepts implemented in these plans were designed to be in coordination with country’s urban hierarchical system.

Despite these efforts, and the apparently Transformation of the rural areas, economic activities and population in the country still show a pattern of regional Concentration.

It seems that polarization processes took place in the Country whereby the influence of the country’s large urban centers attracted the largest share of investments.

This caused a massive rural migration.

The author suggests that this imbalance between the major centers and the rural areas, mainly, in the country can be mended by implementing certain policies to strengthen the economic role of medium Size urban centers.
