Abstract EN

The composition of Arabic classical and popular poetry is governed by rules that it is important to characterize: are they linguistic or non-linguistic rules? Because they play essential role in underlining the particularity of poetry and its literary innovation.

The article aims at defining these rules based on analyses of linguistic and non-linguistic evidences concerning the sub- mentioned two types of Arabic poetry.

To obtain the objective, the writer chooses descriptive and analytical method, applied to literature about the subject and to general remarks concerning poetry verbal performance and analysis of it.

The article’s results affirm the existence of linguistic and non-linguistic rules for the Arabic poetry composition: the linguistic ones can be summarized in the metric measure and the semantic structure of the poem, the others in the mode of performance and the musical measure.

The article also arrives at the fact that a poet may have recourse to more than one rule to emphasize aspects of his poetry combining the beauty of linguistic expression with the technicalities of musical rhythm.
