Abstract EN

This paper dealt with the phenomenon of languageshifting and its status in Darfur to shed light on a number of indicators on the linguistic status in the city of El Geneina to understand the nature of the language situation in it.

As an attempt to shed light on this phenomenon and its consequent factors.

The linguistic shifting that occurs as a result of Linguistic conflict..

The paper aims to draw a picture of the distribution of linguistic use with the ethnic co-existence in the city and this is done through an analytical descriptive perspective by conducting an investigation, in order to determine the prevalence and the decline and the reasons for that.

The paper was divided into three axis:The first axis: Brief profile of Darfur.The second axis: language and society.

,its origin and functions.

The third axis: the linguistic situation in Darfur.

With knowledge of the phenomenon of languageshifting .This study is mainly based on the results of a questionnaire used in random samples of a group of secondary schools in El Geneina in a linguistic survey that represents 1440 students.

The results of the study are the most important: The languages in Darfur are threatened with extinction.

while, Arabic is spreading widely.
