Abstract EN

Arabs have always been extremely interested in the study of their official literature written in the classical Arabic language but no such concern with Arabic folk literature emerged until quite recently .

The reason lies in their apprehension about the influence of colloquial Arabic on the classical language .

Their concern for their folk heritage, on the other hand, motivated many individuals and many institutions to collect and study Arabic folklore.

After this introduction the auther discusses several topics related to the proverb including the definition of the proverb, its origins and evalution, its language, its use , and the aspects of life which effect or are effected by the proverb.
