This article describes the irrigation system used in the village of Battir near Bethlehem to exemplify the ancient irrigation systems used in Palestine.

Al-Batmeh explains in detail how the flow of water is measured, timed, and distributed amongst the various clans of the village.

She shows how the numerous springs in the area were utilized to establish an irrigation system capable of producing a multitude of vegetables.

The author finally ties the concepts of water and springs with Palestinian popular consciousness and folksongs.
