Abstract EN

Introduction: The use of big data has considerable benefits and has become one of the most prominent aspects in contributing to the development of Information and Communication Technologies uses globally.

The characteristics of big data have helped to its spread at all levels,particularly in the field of information management and retrieval during a crisis, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Objective: To learn about the Kuwaiti society’s awareness of the “Big Data” concept, its importance and its benefits during the Corona crisis.

Method: Data collection was achieved through the distribution of a survey that presented the main questions proposed by the study, based on the published scholarly literature related to big data as well as the Corona crisis.

Descriptive and statistical analyses were also employed to describe participants’ demographics, determine their knowledge of the big data concept and the applications used to deal with the Corona crisis.

Results: The study reflected a randomly selected sample representing all of Kuwait’s provinces and age groups.

However, there was a decrease in participation from the young age groups, indicating bias in terms of age.

One of the most significant findings of the study is that 36% of respondents understood the “Big Data” concept.

Most participants also emphasized the importance of using their personal data in crises and its usefulness for decision-making.

The study also indicated the Kuwaiti community’s awareness of big data that emerged from several aspects; including the commitment of families to the Ministry of Health’s official instructions and the governmental agencies’ transparency in reporting relevant Corona disease data.

Recommendations: The study recommends analyzing big data of different entities to employ in decision-making, planning future needs and training staff on its use.

It also emphasizes the priority in hiring an information specialist to manage and raise awareness of big data.

It is necessary to educate the community and increase its awareness and responsibility on the importance of employing big data and making use of it.
