Abstract EN

This study aimed at revealing the predictive ability of illness beliefs and social support of stigma for a sample of patients at psychiatric clinics.

It also aimed at identifying the patients' beliefs concerning the psychiatric ailment, the level of social support, and the level of stigma.

The sample of the study consisted of 404 psychiatric patients in Jordan selected based on the convenience sample method.

To achieve the aims of the study, the researcher developed three scales: a scale to measure the psychiatric patients' beliefs, a scale to measure the social support, and another scale to measure the level of stigma.

The results of the study showed that the increase of life pressure is the reason for psychiatric illness whereas there was a decrease of the belief which is attributed to non-marriage of family members.

The level of social support was high, whereas the level of stigma was average.

The reasons for psychiatric illness and influence on family predicted the support provided by physicians and friends of stigma while the awareness of psychiatric patients, treatment and remedy and the family support did not contribute towards the prediction of stigma
