Abstract EN

Modernism has always been a civilizational reaction that seeks to trespass constraints; an attempt to move away from the past and transcend its positions, concepts, and values.

Its emergence in contemporary Arab criticism caused an intellectual and literary uproar among Arab critics.

Some welcomed it and endorsed its viewpoints, calling for a liberation of the mind that stems from a desire for creating something different.

Others rejected it and deemed it a transgression on custom, and a destruction of that which is sacred; a way for the values embodied in cultural heritage to be lost.

The third party, however, sought to preserve this cultural heritage while accepting this new arrival; hence, they served as mediators between the first two parties.

Undoubtedly, such disagreements led to a tremendous amount of literary contributions in the Arab literary scene.

Our work attempts to answer the following research question: How was the reaction of the literary criticism scene to Modernism?
