Abstract EN

The semi - official relationships - but unstable- between Oman and Brittan has started in the mid 17-th century, specifically with the first formal contact between the two countries in 1645, during the reign of the founder of the Yurubi Rule, Imam Nasser bin Murshid, and then continued under the Imam Sultan bin Saif, when Britain asked for the establishment of a resident in Muscat in 1659, a request that rejected by the Imam.

However, this relationship remained swinging between friendliness and caution, until the signing of the first Treaty between the two countries in 1798.

With the accession of Said bin Sultan in 1807, the relationship between the two countries has developed to a higher level.

This study discusses the Omani-British relations during the rule of Sultan Said bin Sultan by assessing the positions of Britain towards the internal situations in Oman, including internal conflicts and external battles that Sultan Said had involved in.

The core question of this study is that: had Britain's positions and roles aimed to strength Said's rule, or had to seek control over the course of events to enhance the political and commercial interests of Britain, and how Sultan Said had employed the political and military power represented by Britain to strengthen his Omani Empire, politically, militarily and economically?
