Abstract EN

Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics which appeared and prospered in the domain of modern and contemporary linguistic studies.

It proceeded – in studying language – from conventional (or coded) linguistics (structuralism - generative) to contextual linguistics.

Therefore, it has combined textual and contextual studies, and that's what one can find in the ancient Arabic rhetoric, especially in the works of Aldjahidh, one of the most prominent linguists concerned with the Arabic language because of its beauty and special value.

When examining Aldjahidh's works, we find that he dealt with modern pragmatic issues both theoretically and practically using different definitions of terms.

Aldjahidh has attached a great importance to those topics: situationality (the conformity between speak and situation), deixis, the situation of speaker, taking into account the addressee's knowledges while interacting.

Those topics have their corresponding terms in pragmatic theory: the context, the speech requirements (conversational implicature, convenience), pragmatic functions, speech act, deixis and intentionality.

All those elements constitute common domains between Arabic language sciences in Aldjahid's works and pragmatic linguistics to study meaning.

Today, we can – through those works- overlook Arabic language sciences in order to find what we want to know about the practical application of modern and contemporary linguistic methods on the Arabic literature, prose and poetry, provided that we link this literary production with its cultural context instead of reading our Arabic heritage through occidental culture.
