Based on the numerous advantages that augmented reality provides, the current research study aims to investigate the effectiveness of augmented reality technology via mobile phones in developing creative thinking skills among gifted students in intermediate schools in the three levels of creative thinking skills: fluency, flexibility and originality.
The current research study relied on a quasi-experimental design to examine the effeet of the research independent variable (the technology of the augmented reality) on the research dependent variable (creative thinking skills) through a comparison between the control and experimental groups.
The research sample consisted of (24) gifted students in the third intermediate grade of the General Directorate of Education in Makkah Region in the 1439/1440 AH academic year.
The research sample was randomly assigned to the two groups in the research with (12) students in each research group.
In the experimental group, the students studied using the technology of augmented reality.
In the control group, the students studied using the traditional method of teaching that relies on the teacher's explanations.
A creative thinking scale with seven axes was developed to measure the three main levels of creative thinking skills: fluency, flexibility and originality.
Based on the experimental design of the current research study, the research experiment was implemented over two consecutive weeks in which the experimental group used the technology of augmented reality via mobile phones, while the control group used the traditional teaching method.
The results were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test to compare the experimental and the control groups and to determine the significance of the differences between the two groups.
The results of this research study resulted in the development of a standardized augmented reality model which suggested procedures through which the augmented reality technology can be used in the development of gifted students’ creative thinking skills.
The results revealed the effectiveness of the augmented reality technology in developing the skills of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility and originality in addition to the overall ability of creative thinking among the students of the research sample in the experimental group, compared to the students of the control group.
The results of this research study pointed out the necessity of employing augmented reality in the educational process and in developing professional development programs for school teachers in order to equip them with the skills needed to employ the technology of augmented reality in educational settings.
This research study stressed the necessity for curriculum and textbook developers to re-develop the curriculum and textbook activities in science books by changing them into augmented reality activities that integrate physical layers of the books (pages) and virtual augmented layers (digital objects)
