As is the case for all the arts, in cinema there are several levels of the relationship to the work, the first superficial, which is summed up in the film/spectator relationship within the general framework of the institution of entertainment, where the spectator is content to "see" what is apparent in a film.

A second level of relationship is established between an “informed reader” and the film, as soon as the latter undertakes intellectual operations to understand and analyze the deep structures of the film, within the framework of the “scientific” institution.

This level of relationship is probably justified by a desire to “rationalize” the relationship between the object, which is the film, and the subject (informed spectator), and to initiate a “scientific” discourse on the film.
