Abstract EN

When it comes to producing meaning and communicating it to the recipient, a clear difference between the visual and the verbal system is brought to the surface.

the verbal system is based on the linear characteristic as well as the principle of arbitrariness between the signifier and the signified, whereas the visual system lacks these two elements; and perhaps these are the most important differences between these two systems.

however, these two differences do not mean that there is a barrier that prevents interaction between them during the production of meaning within a visual discourse such as static and moving images, plastic arts, and caricature.

therefore, the problematic that this paper seeks to address is the nature of the relationship between the visual system and the verbal one within the meaning-production process.

to address this problematic, this paper is guided by three main questions: (1) how does the caricature use the linguistic sign beside the visual sign? (2) what functions can the linguistic sign perform within a caricature? and (3) can we get rid of the linguistic sign?
