Today's internet provides us with almost unconditional access to information as well as an almost instantaneous ability to discuss various societal topics.

but if this combination seems to work for a form of libertarian intellectual democratization, it is clear that it can also take dramatic turns by organizing highly polarized and extreme debates, which are in no way aimed at the search for the common good.

in the face of the emergence of many hypothetical debates running chaotically on social networks or on press sites, some administrators have even decided to block any form of comments as the ferocity of some comments struggles to serve the public interest.

in fact, the so-called “free” discussions are unable to provide the minimum rules required to ensure the legitimacy of the process of public deliberation among the individuals to be considered as well.

this set of ethical, technical, and intellectual rules can be found in Jürgen Habermas's theory of deliberative democracy that forms the basis of debate ethics.

thus, after defining the nature of “free” debates and reviewing habermas' theory centered around a deliberative democratic model, we shall see how it can be incorporated into new information and communication technologies.
