Abstract EN

Women Empowerment is considered as one of the millstones to achieve sustainable Development and Inclusive growth.

According to a recent OECD report, although women occupied approximately 66% of the world jobs, and produced 50% of food, their income and proprieties shares doesn’t exceed 10% and 1% respectively.

That is why women empowerment should be an essential part of any strategy toward achieving sustainable development, poverty reduction and food security.

This paper aims to analyze the status of women empowerment in Africa with focusing on the economic dimension of empowerment, and its role in achieving economic growth in Africa.

The paper is divided into four sections: the first is the definition and dimensions of women empowerment with a special focusing on the economic dimension.

The second analyzes the relationship between women empowerment and sustainable development.

Then, in the third and fourth sections, the paper analyzes the status of women empowerment in Africa and identifies the main efforts of empower African women and obstacles embedding this empowerment.

The paper conclude that, the problem in Africa is not the women economic participation rates, actually the production and employment of African women is relatively high, the real problem is the gender inequalities in most of African countries that prohibit women from achieving their full potentials due to the legal and economic constraints especially those related to their rights of assets acquisition and access to education and training essential to increase their productivity.
