Abstract AR
Abstract EN
This study attempts to discuss the importation of Chinese labor to work in gold mines in South Africa to manage the challenging mining situation after the Boer War 1899-1901.
It also covers the repressive work practices and restrictive living conditions practiced by the mine owners against Chinese workers, as well as the racist attitudes from the mines Management and white supervisors, in addition to other challenging issues like communication misunderstanding due to language difficulties, which caused many problems between management and workers.
It also underlines the focus of the miners focus on extracting the maximum possible return from what they considered as an expensive investment.
On the other hand, Chinese workers were not able to search for any work in other sectors or to break their unfair contracts.
Whereas the British government was determined to support the production of mines with the utmost form of assistance in rebuilding South Africa in the aftermath of the Boer War, which made the government tolerant of the mine-owners' approach towards the Chinese workforce.
This convergence of views between the British government and the mine owners led to a repressive system of work conditions, especially in gold mines.
