Emperor Charlemagne died on January 28, 814 AD, and was succeeded by his only son, Louis the pious, who survived the death of his two brothers, Pepin, who died in 810 AD.
Charles joined him in the following year and was destined to rule a sprawling empire that stretched from the Alps in the east to Catalonia in the west.
