Abstract EN

This paper is a comparative study of Plato’s political project in his Republic and that of Aristotle in his Book of Politics, to point out their position on politics in general and the state in particular.

Plato’s philosophy in general is depicted as idealist, while Aristotle’s is said to be nearer to naturalism and his political project as nearer to realism.

Are these two descriptions can be accurate in regards of their political stance, and to what limit? This raises many questions: How did Plato built his state and political project on individuals of certain class, while Aristotle insisted on the role of the family, then the village, then the collective number of villages that would form the state? Was the Aristotelian project more plausible to be practically implemented as opposed to Plato’s idealistic project? This paper aims at presenting answers to such key questions in order to be able to understand the philosophical roots of politics and state within the Greek philosophy in general and those of Plato’s and Aristotle’s in particulars.
