The study seeks to clarify the role and efforts of ECOWAS in building peace in West Africa, depending on its various security structures and mechanisms that support its endeavors to achieve a positive sustainable peace.

It was found that ECOWAS, through its security arrangements with regard to peacebuilding, has contributed to the establishment of negative peace, but due to its structural, financial and functional weakness, it has achieved insufficient results in terms of positive peacebuilding, which resulted in the need to coordinate its activities with the United Nations and to seek support exterior.
