يعتبر ابن خلدون أحد أبرز أعلام فلسفة التاريخ فهو لم يساهم في إنشاء علم في التاريخ فقط بل مارس النقد الفلسفي للمعرفة التاريخية و بهذا الخصوص فإن التاريخ لا يزيد عن كونه خبرا عن الاجتماع الإنساني وعليه فإنه لا يمكن تحديد قواعد المنهج في علم التاريخ إلا من خلال فهم طبيعة الظاهرة الاجتماعية.
