Abstract EN

This study aimed to identify the relationship between psychological hardiness and psychosomatic disorders in university students during the time of the Corona pandemic in a light of some variables sex and age.

The researcher used the descriptive, analytical and comparative method of research by administering the psychological hardiness scale (modified and standardized form of the Cobasa PH Scale, 1982) and the New Cornell Psycosomatic Disorders Index (modified by Brodman et al., 2006, shortened and standardized by the researcher) to identify psychosomatic diseases incurring a sample of 400 male and female students from King Abd University Dear in Jeddah.

The researcher further used, (T) tests for independent samples, analysis of One-way ANOVA, Stepwise Multiple Regression, and the Pearson correlation coefficient to study, describe and compare the variables at issue.

The results revealed statistically significant differences between the study participants’ estimates of the level of psychological hardiness prevailing among university students due to gender differences in favor of females on the three dimensions of the hardiness scale.

Findings also revealed statistically significant differences between the study sample estimates regarding the variable of psychosomatic disorders attributable to the gender variable in favor of females on all sub-scales of the New Cornell Index.

The results also indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the study sample estimates of the level of psychological stiffness prevailing among university students due to the age variable and the presence of statistically significant differences on the variable of psychosomatic disorders attributed to the age variable, as well as a statistically significant correlation at a level of 0.01 between gender and psychosomatic disorders.

There was also a statistically significant correlation at a significance level of 0.01 between gender and psychological hardiness, as well as a statistically significant correlation at a level of 0.01 between age, psychological hardiness and psychosomatic disorders.

Finally, psychological hardiness and age could be could be contributing predictors of psychosomatic diseases in university students, at 31.6% and 34.1% of variance, yet gender had a negative predictive value.

The study ended with a discussion of the results in the light of the psychological counseling and mental health literature, and was concluded by developing recommendations and suggestions for future research.
