L'oralité et l'écriture font partie de plusieurs dichotomies qui ont attiré l'attention des chercheurs dans différentes disciplines, Afin de déterminer leur importance et de trouver la spécificité de chacune, et la relation qu'elles ont.

En particulier, la présence de l'un d'eux rappelle la présence de l'autre.

Si l'oralité est le seul moyen de communication entre les membres des communautés orales, la littérature a changé la forme de la conscience humaine plus que toute autre invention; car elle préserve et maintienne l'oralité de l'extinction.
