The mahalla apparatus is considered one of the important military institutions in Algeria during the ottoman era, as the ruling authority in Algeria relied on it to extend its influence in areas far center of power, and a mainstay for controlling the interior of the country.

where this apparatus played a key role, especially on the security level, it was used in order to extend the authority in Algeria, quell revolutions and rebellions, and apply the law, through the subjugation and the suppression of revolutionary Sufi orders, notably “Tijaniya” order, which caused major security imbalances within the state.
