This article focuses on the secularism in France and examines the role of the authority in exclusion the identity of Muslim, and neutralizing the presence of the Islamic religion in the public domain by issuing a set of laws (such as the French law banning religious symbols).

this study going beyond the theoretical and ideal reading of secularism into a realistic and more extreme reading, in which secularism transforms from an egalitarian structure in which all citizens enjoy the same rights and duties, to an exclusionary structure in which alternative and different identities are excluded-according to the state's viewpoint-.

the main research question researching the role that secularism played in justifying anti-Muslim policies in France.

in the result, the French secularism has turned into a kind of identity ideology, which is specifically compatible with a specific identity (the identity of the white man) already present in the public sphere and refuses to accommodate new or alternative identities.
