One of the results of Algeria’s ratification of CEDAW was that it assumed an obligation to harmonize its internal legislation with the provisions of that agreement, including the protection of women’s rights from all forms of violence and abuse.

Nearly twenty years after its ratification, the Algerian legisl at or issued the text of Law No.

19-15 of December 30, 2015 amended and supplemented the Penal Code, which included the criminalization of forms of violence against women, and the criminalization of spousal violence took the largest part of the provisions of the aforementioned amendment.
