This article aims to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the early history of aphasia.

according to many researchers in this field, the scientific study of this disorder dates back to the second half of the 19th century, when Paul Broca (1861) and carl Wernicke (1874) described the two classic forms of aphasia that bear their names now.

about a hundred years later, Benton and Joynt provided in 1960 a historical overview of the literature on aphasia from the writings of Hippocrates (ca.

400 BC to 1800).

since this basic revision there has been a growing tendency to date this disorder, which has led many researches in the field of neuroscience to interest in the hitherto unknown literature.

we also aim to make a contribution by reviewing clinical observations and theoretical analyzes of the phenomena of aphasia that preceded the pioneering article that Broca wrote in the same year.
