The literary criticism movement started at the end of the pre-Islamic era, and its field of activity was the commercial markets and literary councils where people gather, such as the Okaz market, the latter where poets gathered to recite their poems, and poets criticized each other, and that was the first nucleus of Arab criticism.

poetry remained in this state until the third century when Ibn Salam al-Jumahi appeared, who, through his writing “Tabaqat Stahl al-Shu'ara”, tried to balance the poets through the idea of strata that Ibn Salam took from the modernists, and based on this idea, Ibn Salam divided the poets into ten layers.

and he made four poets in each class, depending on the pattern of the closed class.
