Abstract EN

The literature on civil society and democratisation has concentrated on comparative studies among those democratic countries and, simultaneous process of democratic transition.

But few of them have examined comparatively the various types of civil society resulting from non-democratic societies particularly in the arab region.

Accordingly, this study examines whether the type of state (as: strong /weak, democratic/ authoritarian, monarchy /republic) plays a role in the effectiveness or fragility of civil society.

And concluded that the growth of a vibrant civil society in the arab world requires a strong(hard) state more than a democratic state, particularly in arab societies that are still going through a democratic transition.
