Realist environmental security theory presents an analysis of the international conflict in the light of environmental threats; it argues that there is a correlation between environmental problems and national security, which appears in the resource scarcity as a cause of conflict.

This article attempts to explore the interrelationship between the environment and national security in the Arab world, by focusing on the problem of water scarcity.

Taking the Egyptian water security crisis in the Nile River Basin as a model, the article conclude that the Egyptian water deficit due to the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam can have direct and indirect effects on the Egyptian national security, so that the issue of preserving the water resources of the Nile River would be greater than just an environmental issue, it is instead a vital national security issue.
