Abstract EN

The fishing industry was of major economic importance during ancient times, so widespread that a whole manufacturing industry emerged, mainly focused on fish salting and fish sauce, which ultimately encouraged the emergence of more appropriate monuments with specific areas and layouts.

despite its importance, researchers, mainly because of the lack of material data, have so far neglected this type of industry.

in what follows, we would like to focus on the process of this industry, considering its value as a cultural heritage but also the diversity of the product, since the romans consistently developed and excelled at fish manufacturing but also at trading, just as they did with wine, oil and grain.

secondly, we will try to define the functioning of this process through the means and infrastructures required to allow trading those products all around the Mediterranean sea and further, among which, the stocking vessel like amphoras and the ports which received them.
