Security measures are the second form of criminal punishment, which appeared in the second half of the nineteenth century, and is defined as individual coercive treatment that imposes its signature on individuals who pose a threat to the social system and therefore it can be considered a means of social defense.

These measures have a role in bridging the shortcomings the suffered from the penalty or support it when the latter are insufficient, as its function is directed to the future to confront dangerous criminals, and to protect society from potential dangers that require intervention to contain it so that it does not develop into crimes and becomes a threat to society.
