Abstract EN

Talking about social classes in Mauritania puts us before two levels of classes in the general concept of class, and perhaps two levels of analysis as well.

When talking about “class” in Mauritanian society, that traditional class emerges to us at the outset, in the form of a hierarchical social hierarchy based on social origin and lineage.

This, despite its importance for sociological analysis, is not what we are going to study and research, although it has a clear presence in the form of the new classes that resulted with the transition to the national state and the birth of modern society in Mauritania, and these new social classes are what we want to address in this study.

Therefore, we chose a precise time period (1975-2016), to study those social classes that were produced by the process of modernizing social and economic structures under the so-called independence state or the national state.
