Cette aveuglante absence de lumière est l'histoire du carcéral dans le bagne de Tazmamart.

Le narrateur est enfermé avec ses confrères dans des cellules isolées et sous la terre, sa réflexion affranchit les murs du bagne et quitte les lieux grâce à la magie du mot, et à l'expression poétique.

Le récit se fond derrière les éléments mobilisant l'espace, il devient un actant principal et à travers lequel, la narration tombe en écho et favorise la déconstruction-construction du récit.

Cette recherche a la volonté de démontrer les rapports scripturaux qu'entretient l'espace, comme mode d'écriture dans le récit de Ben Jelloun.

L'espace devient le cadre où s'entremêlent de nombreuses digressions.
