Historical research on sports and sports games constitutes a fertile field that arose historical questioning and historiography such subjects are still untouched and have not attained their scientific and research rights in terms of academic studies and research by many researchers.

sport is known to be one of the useful arts since ancient times, which has evolved and developed with the renaissance of peoples and civilizations, and therefore it is an ancient extension and a valuable cultural heritage, which must be preserved and developed through the ages, and wrestling is an integral part of this physical heritage, as most peoples practice it and hold their own parties, within the framework of popular traditional culture.

as is the case in ottoman Algeria, local and foreign historical sources have informed us of many historical texts and evidence about this sport and its importance in Algerian society.

it seems also that the Algerians inherited this sport from the ottoman Turks, who knew it, as it was called to them "oil wrestling", and on this basis this sport spread among social circles, and took the lion’s share in terms of fame and amateurs.

nowadays, it is still of interest.

and the turnout of many Algerians and others.

upon this historical scientific view, our study is entitled "wrestling sport in ottoman Algeria through local and foreign historical sources", by asking the following questions : what is the sports arts in Algeria during the ottoman era ? were Algerians interested in sport as an inherited people's heritage or influenced by other delegations ? why is wrestling so popular in Algeria ? have special spaces and places of practice been established during the studied period ? this present study aims to shed light on the importance and place of wrestling sport in the hearts of Algerians, and its role in the development of professional sport in Algeria during the modern era.
