Methodologies of teaching learning languages knew a remarkable development during the history, caused by different factors as: needs change, objectives, and quality of learners.

For that reason, we seek from the historical review of these methodologies to pick up the principles and objectives of each one of them.

After that we try to reveal the priority gave to such linguistic skill, and especially revealing the change of focusing from grammatical rules as an essential content of linguistic abilities, to focusing on how the language is used by learners in different communicative contexts.
