Abstract EN

This study aimed to identify the role of social work with both of patient, patient's family, and medical team in mental health hospitals, and to reach the most important proposals to improve the role of social work in mental health hospitals.

the social survey method was used.

the study community included all social workers in mental health hospital in Buraidah whose number is (23) social workers.

the study sample included all members of the study community, where as the study sample was selected in a comprehensive inventory method.

the researcher prepared a questionnaire to collect data.

the study results showed that the main roles of social work with the patient are: studying the case of the patient from the social point of view, mitigating the negative effects of mental illness, working to increase the hope of the future and the possibility of improvement at the patient, and helping the patient to understand the nature of his illness.

for the most important roles of social work with the patient's family are: working to strengthen the morale of the patient's family, providing the patient's family with information regarding the nature of his illness, training the family on how to deal with the wrong behaviors of the patient, and relieving the frustration and tension that may exist at the patient's family.

the most important roles of social work with the medical team are: conducting psychosocial evaluation of the patient, participating the medical team in their daily rounds on the patients, providing the medical team with the necessary information about the patient, and coordinating the communications between the medical team and the patient and his family.

the results also showed that there are many proposals to improve the role of social work in mental health hospitals, such as: increasing the number of social workers in mental health hospitals to accommodate increasing numbers of patients, giving more powers to the social worker within the hospital, raising awareness among the patients and their families of the important role of social worker, and urging the patients and their families to provide the social workers with the necessary information to perform their professional role.
