This research studies the issue of general reference as seen by the scholars of the principles of jurisprudence, their views on this issue, the dispute between them, and the impact of this dispute on the science of jurisprudence and the science of principles of jurisprudence.

The research consists of an introduction, three sections and a conclusion.

The first section introduces the definition of semantic reference and divisions of general reference and the formulas denoting it.

The second section discusses the issue of general reference, and the third deals with the fruits reaped as a result of the controversy over this issue.

The conclusion contains the most important results and recommendations.

Among the results reached is the importance of semantics issues, and the importance of general reference in particular because the disagreement among scholars of principles of jurisprudence over it is considerable.

This disagreement has its impact on the fundamental principles of jurisprudence and on jurisprudence as a science.
