Modern trade unions operate in two main areas: the State and politics on the one hand, and the labour market and collective bargaining on the other.

The relative importance of their economic and political activities also varies between the countries of the world, historically according to the history and location of each trade union activity within each country, between the types of trade union and the area of its work, and the manner and extent of union coordination in those areas.

In recent decades, the political activities of most trade unions have increasingly focused on the objectives they seek in collective bargaining, such as economic, industrial and labour market policy, general economic infrastructure, training and learning, social welfare policy and social wages, as well as the legal framework for collective bargaining and representation in the workplace.

With different sources of legislation from international, national or domestic sources, the development of trade union rights in sources of international legislation is addressed through international treaties and conventions concluded by States among themselves or by global or regional organizations.

The national constitutions also guarantee trade union rights before the public authority in the exercise of those rights, both by civil servants in particular and by individuals in general.

Thus enabling trade unions to defend the economic and social rights and interests that affect their segment of trade union members, in the light of the radical transformations taking place in the modern world.
