Abstract EN

The purpose of the current paper is to identify the factors of continuity in the parliamentary representation of political families in order to determine the factors contributing to the continuation of some political families in the House of Representatives for several consecutive parliamentary terms represented, with applying to three constituencies in Sohag governorate.

The study analyzes this phenomenon during the period 1980 to 2020, after reviewing the representation in Egypt since the beginning of parliamentary life in 1923 as a historical background to confirm the existence of the phenomenon of political families.

the research paper used the method of qualitative research, through in-depth interviews, and relied on a guide of questions that serves the goal of the study after being approved and reviewed by professors of sociology and politics.

The paper concludes that several factors contribute to the continuity of political families in parliamentary representation: preserving the social status; the ability to manage the electoral process; possessing a network of inherited political alliances; the weakness of political parties; adopting the majority electoral system which is primarily used for single – member constituencies confined in a narrow geographical area; possessing wealth; and the ability to provide services and exchange benefits.
