English Abstract

Plants have the capability to synthesize several organic molecules with novel and distinctive biological activities.

Hence, the ethanolic crude extracts of Rubus canescens, Haloxylon salicornicum, and Salsola vermiculata were investigated to highlight their biological capabilities in control bacterial growth and reducing oxidative stress.

Antibacterial activity was evaluated by agar diffusion assay and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was deduced by broth microdilution method.

Also, the antioxidant potential of plants crude extracts was detected using DPPH assay.

canescens revealed superior antibacterial and antioxidant activities over the other two plant species.

It affected the growth of all tested bacterial and caused inhibition in growth of P.

aeruginosa, S.

aureus, B.

cereus, B.

subtilis, and E.

coli (12-18 mm) with MIC (0.375-6 mg/ml), while E.

aerogenes was the most resistant bacteria.

However, it caused inhibition in DPPH radical with IC50 (12.29 ± 0.18 µg/ml, 244.1 ± 3.58 µM Trolox/mg plant extract).

Meanwhile, H.

salicornicum extract exhibited very weak antibacterial activity just to tested Bacillus species and moderate antioxidant activity (IC50: 281.78 ± 7.2 µg/ml, 12.59 ± 0.31 µM Trolox/mg plant extract); crude extract of S.

vermiculata was not active against all tested bacterial strain nor possessed antioxidant potential (IC50: 695.14 ± 14.01 µg/ml, 4.3 ± 0.09 µM Trolox/mg plant extract).

Despite the variations in bioactivities between the tested plants, they had a comparable phenolic content (12.9 ± 0.2 – 13.9 ± 0.2 GAE/g plant dry weight) and embrace phenols, terpenes, alkaloids, and steroids.
