The aim of the research is to know the effect of the strategy (PQ4R) on the achievement of first-grade intermediate students in mathematics and the development of their mathematical prowess.

Salah al-Din Governorate was divided into two groups, one of which represented the experimental group consisting of (41) students and the other control group consisting of (40) students.

Parity was conducted between the two groups in a number of variables.

The experimental design with two equal groups was adopted, and to achieve the goal of the research, the two researchers prepared two tools, one of which is an achievement test consisting of (5) essay paragraphs with a specific answer, and the other is a measure of mathematical proficiency in its final form of (30) items of the objective type, multiple-choice with (7, 7, 8, 8) Items for each of the dimensions (conceptual comprehension, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning) and their validity, distinction and stability items were verified.

The experiment was applied in the first semester of the academic year (2019-2020), as the two groups were taught according to the plans prepared in advance for each group, and then the achievement test and the mathematical prowess scale was applied.

After data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate statistical methods, the results showed: 1.

There is a statistically significant difference at the level of significance (0.05) between the average achievement of the students of the experimental group who were studied using the (PQ4R) strategy and the students of the control group who were taught in the usual way and in favor of the experimental group.2.

There is a statistically significant difference at the level of significance (0.05) between the mean scores of the Mathematical Proficiency Scale between the students of the experimental and control groups and in favor of the experimental group.

In light of the research results, the two researchers came up with a number of conclusions, recommendations and suggestions.
