The moxifloxacin (MOX) antibiotic is a fourth-generation quinolone.

In alkaline media, the chemical reactions between moxifloxacin hydrochloride and three transition metal chlorides of scandium(III), yttrium(III), and hafnium(IV) have been performed with 1:2 (M:L) molar ratio.

The proposed structures of the prepared MOX complexes were assigned using microanalytical (elemental analysis), molar conductivity, (infrared, UV-Vis electronic, and XRD) spectra, magnetic susceptibility, and thermogravimetric analysis.

The chemical formulas afforded by mentioned analyses can be designed as[Sc(MOX)2(H2O)(Cl)] (1), [Y(MOX)2(H2O)(Cl)]·4H2O (2) and [Hf(MOX)2(Cl)2]·H2O (3).

The MOX drug ligand exhibits O,O chelation via the oxygen carbonyl and oxygen carboxylato groups.

The spectroscopic analyses have been characterized for Sc (III), Y(III), Hf (IV) complexes suggesting an octahedral geometry.

The axial position is occupied by coordinated H2O and Cl chelates for Sc (III) and Y(III) while the Hf (IV) complex has a two chloride chelates exhibited in the axial position.

In vitro anti-bacterial, -fungal, and-cancer activities of the MOX complexes have been reported.

These new complexes have an anti-microbial efficient.
