On this basis, Britain occupied Aden in 1839 to make it a springboard for the occupation of other areas in the Somali coast, France bought the port of Obock in 1862, and Egypt moved under Ottoman sovereignty to settle in the ports of Suakin and Massawa in 1865, a new contract with the sheikhs resulted in the purchase of Assab in 1869.
