Abstract EN

The city of Karbala has a privileged location in the Middle Euphrates region.

It islocated in the central part of Iraq105 km southwest of Baghdad, and is sometimes calledthe city of Imam Al-Hussein 'peace be upon him'.

It is bordered to the north by AnbarGovernorate, to the south by Najaf Governorate, to the east by Hilla Governorate and tothe west by the Baadiah (desert) of Al-Sham and part of the Hijaz lands.

It is thus locatedin the middle of the sedimentary plain land on the Euphrates River's right bank namedas "Al-Alqami River".

It extends westward to the western hill, and is watered by the Al-Hussainiya River which descends from the right bank of the Euphrates River.

The administrative map design of the city of Karbala witnessed major changesafter the legislation of the Provincial Law of (1977) when it was separated from Najafgovernorate during the second republican era (1968-1979).

Thus, the area of Karbalahad shrunk significantly at the end of that era as compared to what it was in the 1920sand 1930s.

Consequently, the administrative map in Karbala governorate included theold city center, Hindiya district, Karbala district, and Ain al-Tamr district.
