Abstract EN

Liberation-based education experiences and the use of theater-based educational strategies provide specific opportunities for the youth sector to explore and develop a better understanding of the situation they live through.

It also provides them with a platform to learn issues and concepts related to community and civic participation and engagement .These experiences give a suitable space and opportunity for young people to deal with the various topics and issues that they experience in an artistic and creative way.

In this paper ,the researcher presents the results of two studies that she has conducted .The first study took place with a number of Bethlehem University Drama Society in 2012 .The second study was with a group of young people from Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society in Aida Palestinian Refugee Camp in Bethlehem in 2018 .The latter group has been committed to working in art and theater activities .The major objective of these two studies was to identify the kind of experiences that each of the two groups had in working in theater .The studies also attempts to determine the aspects of learning and development that occurred to them as a result of those experiences ,and their relationship to the community and civic participation and engagement.

In the two studies ,the researcher adopted a qualitative-research methodology .She also used individual interviews and focus groups to collect information in both samples .The results of these two studies revealed some common aspects of the two groups :the experience has dimensions related to the community and civic engagement and the basic work mechanisms in them .These experiences contributed to the development of personal aspects of the members of each group feeling bold and self-confident ,developing a positive self-concept ,taking responsibility ,communicating with others and accepting their opinions .There was also a clear improvement in the level of public awareness towards some daily issues in society .In addition to that, initiatives and a clear commitment to community service and participation has increased.
