Arab literature did not witness a purely literary genre namely the novel except in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

So, the origin of the novel is Western.

The novel arose in modern Arab literature in the beginning, influenced by the Western novel by simulating some foreign writers in their writing of historical novels from what they received from translations, where they deal with the past in imaginary pictures and narrate some events as a specific incident or a known personal biography.

These attempts were made by several notables, led by Salim Al-Bustani (1848-1884) in his well-known novel (Zenobia), then followed by Farah Antoine (1874-1922) in his novel (New Jerusalem), Yaqoub Sarrouf (1852-1927) in his novel (The Girl of Egypt) and others.

Those writers take the ethics and education as a goal for their novels.

The transformation in the Arab historical novel was at the hands of Gujri Zaidan (1861-1914), who wrote (22) historical novels, and was considered a pioneer of this literary genre.
