they are rich in theories and concepts; they include a range of impressive primary sources and archival material as well as a watershed spectrum of thematically arranged references.

they endeavour to portray a living, picturesque piece of the history of sociology and social theory as well as his discursive, epistemological, and traditional classification of sciences-but most importantly, they convey his contemporary theoretical and practical relevance of the social sciences.

in this article, building on Alatas’ dynamic interplay between “Islam” and “social change”, i analyse his pioneering contribution to a salient ‘Muslim social theory’-from the lens of Islam, not only as a religion, but also as a culture, way of life, and most importantly, as a “social practice”.
