This article is inspired by late sociologist Syed Hussein Alatas's theoretical and methodological frameworks on development in developing regions.

it discusses the problem of uncritical imitation that is foundational to the structure of present "global" human development agendas, such as the un's millennium development goals (2000 – 2015) and the sustainable development goals (2015-2030).

drawing on Lebanon as an empirical case study, this article proposes that the practice of uncritical imitation can be contradictory and lead to chronic dependency and underdevelopment.
