Abstract EN

The study aims to present a scientific-socio-economic approach to the reality and problem of the concept of feminization of poverty in Jordan, by conducting an analysis of the phenomenon of feminization of poverty in its economic, social, and political contexts, and studying the methodologies used in defining the feminization of poverty.

the study utilized a (qualitative) research method, using semi-structured in-depth individual interviews as a tool for collecting information, and it was applied to a purposive sample of 11 specialized experts, current officials, and contestants in ministries and public concerned with poverty, in addition to academics specialized in this field.

the results of the study appear to show that poverty in Jordan is feminine, which was based on several indicators, including income, expenditure, and the number of women beneficiaries of the national aid and zakat funds, keeping in mind that the official poverty figures do not reflect the reality of women’s poverty in Jordan because of their reliance on methodologies for calculating monetary poverty and on the concept of women’s support for poor families, noting that the concepts of «multi-dimensional poverty» or«humanitarian poverty» are the most appropriate in this field.

in light of the results, the study recommended that a clear concept of feminization of poverty be developed that takes into account the social and economic dimensions of the status of women, and does not depend only on material spending, i.e., the adoption of multidimensional or humanitarian poverty.
