Abstract EN

Since 2018, Saudi Arabia has been hosting several international sports events, such as Formula E, Boxing World Championships, Italian Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup and Dakar Rally.

Examining the impact of hosting sports events on the Saudi Arabia’s international image is the main objective of this study.

After examining the origins of the concept of sports diplomacy, the study focuses on the opinions of international sports journalists on the effects of hosting sports events on the Saudi Arabia’s international image.

The study finds that more than 80% of the sample believe that following sporting tournaments and events organised by the kingdom positively affects the image of Saudi Arabia.

The study recommends that the ministry of sports in Saudi Arabia should have a clear sports diplomacy strategy and a clear message to take advantage of the successful hosting of sports tournaments.

Such strategy should pursue sports diplomacy within a wider strategy of public diplomacy.
